- HONIGMANN, Barbara
- Barbara Honigmann was
born in East Berlin in 1949, after her parents had returned from
British exile in 1947. She studied theater at the Humboldt University
from 1967 to 1972 and, then, worked as a stage director. Since 1975
she has been a freelance writer. In 1984 she left the GDR to move
away from "a woeful diaspora in East Berlin" to Strasburg,
France, to become part of the "Alsatian Jewry," a vibrant
community of more than 15,000 Jews; she still lived in Strasburg.
Homigmann works as a painter and writer, and she writes prose and
for the theater.
