- HEIN, Christoph
- Christoph Hein,
born in 1944, grew up in a small town in Saxony (East Germany) but
went to high school in West Berlin—autobiographical elements
that are reflected in Schöne Bescherung, printed in
Vol. 5, No. 1, which is told with the adult author's suppleness
but without losing the young boy's innocence and surprise. Hein
established himself as a majro writer of the German Democratic Republic,
both as a playwright and a storyteller. A courageous critic of GDR
censorship, Hein was among those who suggested attempting socialism
with a human face after the collapse of Communism. After unification,
Hein reestablished himself as a major writer with his 1997 collection
of stories.
