- Martin R. Dean, born in
Menziken (Aargau) in 1955, is the son of a globetrotter from Trinidad
and Tobago and a Swiss mother. He has travelled widely himself, including
destinations in the Caribbean, Portugal, Italy, and Greece, as well
as longer stays in Southern France and Paris. After studying German
literature, ethnology, and philosophy, he received his Ph.D. from
the University of Basel with a dissertation on Hans Henny Jahnn's
novel Perrudja in 1986. He has since worked as a novelist,
playwright, journalist, essayist, and secondary-school teacher in
Basel. His novels include Meine Väter (2003) and Monsier
Fume oder das Glück der Vergesslichkeit (1988), both published
by Hanser Verlag. Among his many literary awards is the 2003 prize
of the Swiss Schiller Foundation. One of his texts "The Blue
Elephant," has appeared in English translation. Vol. 8, No. 2/3
includes the debut publication of the German-language origianl text
