Dimension2: Contemporary German-Language Literature

BONGS, Rolf
Rolf Bongs was born in Düsseldorf in 1907, where he also died in 1981. He wrote his dissertation on Heinrich von Kleist, was a soldier and war correspondent during the Second World War, later worked as a journalist, and finally became a free-lance writer in 1956. His works primarily encompass prose texts and poems. For his prose, Bongs acknowledges early influences by Kleist and Gide. His poetry, initally influenced by Hölderlin and Whitman, always retains clarity. In 1971, he was visiting professor at the University of Massachussetts at Amherst.
