- Jürgen Jacob Becker
was born in 1964 and studied German and Latin American literatures
in Mainz and Berlin. For many years he has been at the Literary Colloquium
Berlin, where he is in charge of the program and also directs the
Deutsche Übersetzerfonds. He is the coeditor (together with Ulrich
Janetzki) of several anthologies: Helden wie Ihr: Junge Schriftsteller
über ihre literarischen Vorbilder (2000) and Die Stadt
nach der Mauer: Neue Literatur aus Berlin (1998). The essay included
in Volume 7, Number 1 is the translation of Becker's preface to the
latter book, a collection of texts that testify to the vibrant literature
written in Berlin about Berlin.
